The undergraduate thesis is done by research and used to measure student competency in the field specific to their Study Program. The end result of the undergraduate thesis is in the form of a final report of a research that the student has conducted with a total of 9.6 ECTS. Students are intensively guided by 1-2 supervisor(s) during the process. Supervisor(s) are assigned to based on the fitness/closeness of the research topic proposed by the student and academic staff expertise/research interest. There are several steps for each student to complete the final thesis, in which each step is used as an assessment material. Undergraduate thesis begins with the selection of an appropriate supervisor according to the student’s research interest. By default, his/her academic supervisor will become his/her thesis supervisor, but in case the thesis topic is not in line with the academic supervisor’s area of expertise, then another supervisor will be appointed. BAEC utilizes a reviewer team instead of seminar to review the research proposal. In addition to the proposal, this academic meeting facilitates students to deliver a progress report, to share their progress pertaining to their research methods and data collection.
Once the research is completed and the thesis manuscript is prepared, students may take the thesis final defence. Students can take the final thesis defence once all of their grades have been released; no E grade; the amount of D grade<25% with GPA ≥ 2.0; the total amount of completed ECTS is 209.89 ECTS; provide complete administration papers (student card and latest transcript) and thesis manuscript approved by the supervisor. Students are required to conduct a seminar with a minimum attendance of 10 students and also all supervisors (i.e. open defence) as a prerequisite for taking a closed defence, while for BFPT, such a seminar is not obligatory. The final defence is to be conducted a month, at the latest, after the thesis concept/manuscript has been approved by the team of supervisors.
Hereafter, the undergraduate thesis committee (department level) will select one or two appropriate academic staff as examiner or the final defence judges. The final thesis defence (closed defence) is done by presentation which takes about 20 minutes and it is followed by an oral examination for about 1.5 hour. The implementation of final defence can also be made available through an on-line system, in cases where an external supervisor or examiner is present.
